Easy-going. Low maintenance. Never a problem. It sounds like a compliment, and it was also a choice — one you made so long ago it stopped feeling like one.
Letting the small thing go. Not mentioning the part that stung. Choosing the place you didn't want because it mattered less to you than to them. None of that is a flaw. It only becomes one when there's no version of you left that asks for anything.
You can tell the second someone's off. You adjust before they've said a word. It rarely runs the other way, and after a while you stop expecting it to — which is quieter than being disappointed, and lonelier.
It's not a lie exactly. It's the fastest route back to being uncomplicated. The cost is that nobody ever finds out what the honest answer would have been.
